Can I permanently buy a domain name?

Estimated reading: 1 minute

Yes, you can permanently buy a domain name, but it’s important to note that technically you are not buying a domain name, but rather registering it for a specific period of time.

When you register a domain name, you are essentially leasing the rights to use that domain name for a set period of time, typically 1 to 10 years depending on the registrar and the top-level domain (TLD) you choose.

However, most domain registrars offer the option to renew your registration before it expires, allowing you to maintain ownership of the domain name. As long as you keep renewing your registration, you can continue to use the domain name indefinitely.

It’s worth noting that some TLDs have special requirements for maintaining ownership of a domain name, such as proving that you are using the domain for a legitimate purpose, or providing updated contact information. If you fail to meet these requirements, you may lose ownership of the domain name.

In summary, while you can’t technically “permanently buy” a domain name, you can maintain ownership of it indefinitely by renewing your registration.
